Well after looking over the different events to run. It looks like I will be doing manly the cover dog trials with mine. They have a lot over trials close to me most with in 4 hrs. a lot of them  only 1  to 2 hr away.  I have spoke to some people that have been running them and it sounds like a pretty kool sport to run.  I checked out NSTRA but there is not to many of them around here.

The Brittany was the only good thing to come from a failed marriage to be honest...I always have worked or trained animals from horses to dogs..Cattle dogs and horses were my life for many years till I moved back to AZ . So long story short I looked into things to do with this brittany and my obsession grew from there.

Then when I got in the NSTRA one of the guys thought he was doing me a favor telling me I would never get anywhere in NSTRA running a brittany that I should get a pointer. So I watched the brittany mags and Nolans Last Bullet was winning winning wininng..So I got a pup from Nolan Huffman since my first brittany had severe Hip Dysplasia and his trial career was cut short even though in his short NSTRA career his was in the top 6 for AZ state

After dealing with pointers setters and GSP's a good dog is a good dog but there is something about the Brittany which I just like a bit better

thank you for the information.  I have trained a few pointers manly GSP a few ESP but only for gun dogs. I do not know a lot about the different pointer breeds, So I have been researching the different pointing breeds to determine witch breed I want to personally, train and compete with. What made you beside to own and train/compete with  Brittney's, ( personality,  team players, drive )

There are lots of different types of Pointing trials
There is AKC and American Field trials most are horse back but they do also have a few walking stakes
these are a stake where the dog has to be steady to wing and shot and then are taken on as the birds are only blanked

then there is cover dog trials this is mostly back east as they are run strictly on wild birds..making this format harder to run with any reliability of getting dogs on birds with less and less places to run..They sound like they would be fun to run also a broke to wing and send on the way format of trial

There is National Shoot to retrieve NSTRA this format is walking and the dog has to be steady to flush at minimum and all birds as long as it is safe are shot for retrieves

There is NAVDHA  this is a format to judge the dog not a competition much like that of a hunt test

the orse back and walking trials which are on a course dogs are to move forward and continue in a forward path working cover there is gun dog shooting dog and all age...many dogs fit the gun dog running bigger shooting dog and all out is all age
The trial formats are 30 minute to 1 hour stakes

then there are your money hunts..this is where time and shooting is of the essence and there is some big money in some of those tournament hunts..dogs don't have to be steady to flush shot or steady till the birds have flown and lit and then send them on to find another

that is the basics of the trials
you can go to AKC web site and search for the pointing dog rules for a little more in depth information

best thing is to find trials

www.americanfield.com
www.akc.org
www.nstra.org

also you can find some of close by trials by looking up breed clubs near you

I have only trained and competed retrievers in FT & HT and am thinking of trying the pointer game. I am looking for information on the rules of competing in FT with pointers, I have trained pointers for gun dogs but never for FT. If there anywhere that list up coming FT ( do they have Hunt test for pointers?) We live on the east cost ( Pa.) I would like to go watch a few to see what it is all about.

thank you for your help
Brian
